Dr. Sheinin trained as a psychiatrist, and then as a child and adolescent psychiatrist. She has worked as an individual, couples, and family therapist for more than 30 years. Through online training with Jane Nelsen and Lynn Lott, Dr. Sheinin has most recently become a Certified Positive Discipline Parent Educator.

Dr. Sheinin spent almost 20 years working at the George Hull Centre, a community based children's mental health centre, where she specialized in working with families with children 0-6 years old.  She has consulted to many community agencies including schools, mental health centres for children and youth, women’s shelters, day treatment centres, daycares and preschools. She has consulted to the Association for Community Living for their daycare consultation program. She worked for many years as a consultant to the City of Toronto Employee Assistance Program, as well as Sourceline a private Employee Assistance Program. She continues to work as a consultant to the South Riverdale Community Health Centre where she started almost 30 years ago working with primary care providers.

Dr. Sheinin has been affiliated with the Hospital for Sick Children for 25 years where she practiced telemedicine. She is also a Lecturer at The University of Toronto.

Dr. Sheinin's therapy is based on her training and study of psychodynamic therapy, relational therapy originating from The Stone Centre, and the principles of various types of family therapy. Her parent support and coaching are based on the principles of Positive Discipline developed by Jane Nelsen, and her colleagues Lynn Lott and others. After so many years of using Positive Discipline and recommending it to parents, Dr. Sheinin still believes wholeheartedly in that method to help parents work towards family harmony and enjoying day to day life with their children.
