HOW TO BE MORE PRESENT WITH YOUR CHILD
It is important for kids to know that they are important to you. Just as important as your work, your hobby, your other kids! Paying attention is one of the greatest gifts you can give your children.
1) Put down whatever you are doing (phone included) and focus on your child.
2) Don’t forget to schedule special time.
3) It is important to create memories, and mind-cues - so your child always has the feeling of your solid connection in their mind.
4) If you can’t be present in that moment you could say - ‘You can see how busy I am right now, could you help me with this task and then I can give you my full attention’.
5) Remind them of special time- ‘I can’t right now, but I am looking forward to our special time’.
6) If you have trouble - which most of us do - sharing attention when on a Zoom call, or when texting or emailing - try to do those activities when your kids are in another place, another room, or when they are actively doing something else.
7) No need to go overboard - kids don’t need your attention full time - and in fact, have things to do where they need to be more independent. No one wants their child to develop the idea that they are THE centre of the universe.
8) Giving your child intentional attention prevents children from seeking undue attention.
