SLEEP FOR PRESCHOOLERS
One thing to remember is that you cannot MAKE a child sleep. You can create the right atmosphere, establish a routine, be in the right mindset as a parent (calm) but you still CANNOT make your child sleep.
By establishing a routine for napping and bedtime, one can also keep in mind that sometimes that might also be a ‘quiet time’ that may then lead to sleep. There is nothing wrong with 'resting’ and spending time with one’s imagination for a bit before falling asleep.
Don’t forget with preschoolers to ‘let the routine be the boss’ (see previous post) - that will help with naptime or bedtime.
Also remember that although children may like to talk and interact at bedtime, a time to feel close to you, keep the conversation away from stressful things, and maybe stick to stories or songs, as described in sleep post for toddlers.
As children get older, involve them in planning that routine, and if necessary creating a routine chart.
Don’t forget to practice that routine (take time for training!)
This is where your work as a parent in the first few years will really pay off. Bedtime/Sleeptime should be a time of calm and connection.
Be kind and firm. Remember you are working towards having a child who is resourceful, resilient, and capable of self-soothing.
