SIBLING RIVALRY 3
Each of your children needs to feel that they belong and are significant. The first place we usually understand a sense of belonging is in our family of origin.
Children are good observers, but not great interpreters, the arrival of a new sibling may lead to a mistaken belief, for example, or observing their sibling’s talent for sports, similarly.
Give authentic, positive messages to each child so that they know how they are special. Not everyone has the same talent or skill, but everyone has unique interests and abilities.
Find activities that stress group co-operation and teamwork, help kids discover that things are more fun when people have disparate abilities/skills and can work together.
Things may not always be ‘fair’ or equal, but all kids do not need the same thing at the same time. Take a long view.
