WHAT ABOUT A MORNING ROUTINE

Sometimes it is best to prepare for the morning the night before - at least to go over the steps.

For younger children, use a visual schedule. Get them to draw or collage pictures of what each step is.

Let the morning schedule be the boss!

Set a deadline for morning tasks - in many households that would be breakfast.

Develop a signal for unfinished chores and let the child experience the consequences of forgetting. Don’t nag or remind.

No screens on.

Use actual alarm clocks - not electronics.

Plan how much time it takes to do each task - try to have no more than 3 activities to be done - which may mean clothes laid out, and backpack ready with lunch packed the night before.

Take time for training - you may even want to try a role play.

You can discuss morning ‘hassles’ at a family meeting, and ask everyone to brainstorm ideas as to how to make it work even better!
