After 30 years of practice Dr. Lisa Sheinin uses many approaches, including elements of psychodynamic and family therapy, as well as cognitive behavioural approaches and relational therapy to offer help in practical ways for the short-term, but also to build long term stability in relationship.

  • Psychodynamic therapy uses the idea that early childhood relationships/experiences may be very much alive in our present day/life relationships. Family Systems therapy is basically the idea the feelings float around in families but may be expressed differently, by different family members. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is therapy to help you change the way you feel by changing the way you think. We almost all use some CBT ideas in our day-to -day life already, without even going to see a therapist. Finally relational therapy basically uses principles of all of the other therapies, but really places a lot of value on relationship. Ithad its origins in the psychology of women.

  • Dr. Lisa Sheinin trained as a couples/family therapist with Libby Ridgely and Paul Steinhauer. She has practiced couples therapy for decades working with couples early in their relationship, through the years of being young parents, right through to dealing with issues of aging. She takes a relational approach that emphasizes the importance of the individual thriving in the context of the couple relationship. In addition to relying on the work of Harville Hendrix (Getting the Love You Want), she also is a firm believer in the approaches of Harriet Lerner (Marriage Rules), as well as Samuel Shem and Janet Surrey (We Have to Talk).
